civil-v-church matrimony

  • Add
  • By alicebb | Thu, 2019-02-28 20:44

When a child was born, it appears that the parents had it baptized prior to registering it
with the civil government. For obvious reasons of infant mortality and salvation, I suppose.

When it came to marriage, which would the couple do first? Church or civil ceremony?

    Thanks so much,
    Alice BB

    Hi,

The civil ceremony came first and then the church.

    civil v church

Thank you, Esther. That's very interesting; I would have thought in Mexico, the church wedding would have come first. Was/Is that the law? That really helps to know when searching marriage info post 1810. Thanks again.
